Counseling Questions

Commonly Asked Questions

Why do people seek counseling?

People come to counseling for a number of different reasons. Some may be having difficulties adjusting to life changes, while others may simply be seeking self-growth or exploration. Therapy can be an excellent support for anyone experiencing relationship issues, depression, anxiety, unresolved child hood issues, spiritual issues, or anyone in need of effective coping skills. Simply put, therapy can be helpful for anyone who feels they are in need of some assistance in creating positive change in their life.

What can I expect in a therapy session?

We will meet for 50 minutes, or 75 minutes if you are attending a hypnotherapy session. During this time we will address your concerns or issues that may currently be a roadblock to happiness. Together we will define your therapeutic goals and work toward them throughout the sessions. I may occasionally give homework to do outside of the session such as journaling or reading a relevant book.

What benefits can I expect from working with a therapist?

Many benefits are available to those seeking psychotherapy. Often a fresh perspective on an old problem can be helpful in creating lasting change. The therapy session can be a safe space to work through issues so that a renewed confidence can occur when one takes their new skills outside of the session. Other benefits may include a greater sense of self, improved relationships, initial problem resolution, coping skills, breaking old unhealthy behavior patterns, and improved self-esteem.

What if I am unsure of my goals for therapy?

If you are unsure of your therapeutic goals, we will work together to clearly define these goals so that you are able to get the most out of therapy. It is my goal to assist you in creating the change that you need for greater life satisfaction as quickly and as efficiently as possible.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is very similar to a standard therapy session with the addition of hypnosis. Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation that is easily achieved with the client's consent. Once the client is in hypnosis, the client is able to access information that may be rooted in the unconscious mind which may be responsible for old, outdated patterns or behaviors. Although hypnotherapy is recommended for most common therapeutic issues, I always allow the client to make the final decision whether or not to make hypnosis a part of their treatment.
